Mario at Minturno
Interesting ancient view, depicting a scene inspired by the famous painting "Mario at Minturno" (1786) by the French artist Jean Germain Drouais, painted in Rome, now at the Louvre, and which at the time greatly impressed Goethe during his stay in Rome; beautiful original aquatint engraving, very evocative work by the Milanese artist and set designer Sanquirico; measures approximately 44x58 cm; specimen presumably datable between the late 18th and early 19th century.
Sanquirico, as an architect, collaborated in creating the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, the Teatro Alberti in Desenzano, the Teatro Sociale in Canzo, the Teatro Sociale in Como and the Teatro Municipale in Piacenza; he created the Arena of Milan with Andrea Appiani and Bargigli; he became the most important set designer of his era; particularly remembered are the set designs for the famous dancer Salvatore ViganĂ²; he collaborated as a painter on the Milan Cathedral, painting the vaults simulating Gothic tracery; also famous are his city views of Milan.
